Professor Julian D C Jones OBE, FRSE

Professor Jones is Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Heriot-Watt University, where his responsibilities including leading Planning and Finance strategies for the university.  As a physicist, Julian’s research interests span the physics and technology of lasers, fibre optics and their applications, including in sensing, manufacturing and communications.

 

Julian is a Director of OptoSci Ltd, a small technology company that manufactures environmental monitoring and educational equipment, almost all for export. From 2014 to 2018 he was a member of the UK Defence Science Advisory Council and he has had previous membership of the Scottish Scientific Advisory Council, from 2010 to 2014. From 2011 to 2019 he was Treasurer of the Institute of Physics (IOP), a member of its Council and has chaired the Optics and Photonics Division, the Optical Group, the Institute in Scotland and the Education Committee in Scotland. Until recently he was Chairman of the Board of IOP Publishing and previously was Editor of the Journal of Measurement Science and Technology. In 2019, he joined the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Julian is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Optical Society of America He received an OBE in 2002 for services to science and engineering.
