He is also Professor of Molecular Enzymology and his major research interests are the structure and mechanism of biosynthetic enzymes and the rational design and development of novel anti-microbial and anti-parasitic agents. Professor Coggins is also Vice President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Chairman of the UK Heads of Biological Science. He has a special interest in the knowledge transfer agenda and in science education and science communication. He is Trustee of the Glasgow Science Centre and a member of the External Advisory Committee of the Glasgow Centre for Population Health.
