Professor Wilson SibbettProfessor Wilson Sibbett CBE, FRS, FRSE Chair of the Scottish Science Advisory Committee and Wardlaw Professor of Physics, University of St Andrews. Professor Sibbett is recognised as a pioneer and world authority in ultrafast lasers, nonlinear optics and optoelectronics/photonics and he has published over 300 scientific journal papers in these areas. His work has wide-ranging applications in the field of ultrafast science and technology, including optical communications and photobiology. He is presently the Co-Technical Director of the St Andrews Photonics Innovation Centre which promotes the linkage of academic research to applications in industry, Director of an EPSRC-funded Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (Ultrafast Photonics Collaboration) on ultrahigh speed data-communications and Co-Director of a SHEFC-funded Strategic Research Development Grant on the application of photonics to biology and medicine. He received the Rank Prize for Optoelectronics in 1997 and the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society for "Research into Ultrashort-pulse Laser Science and Technology" in 2000. In 2002 he was awarded the Quantum Electronics Prize by the European Physical Society in recognition of the ‘excellence and enduring impact’ of his major research contributions. Professor Steve BeaumontProfessor Steven Beaumont OBE, CEng, MIEE, FRSE Vice Principal, Research and Enterprise, and Professor of Nanoelectronics, University of Glasgow. Professor Beaumont was previously Director of the Institute for System Level Integration (ISLI) where he was concerned with improving the links between industry and academic education and research. His research interests focus on nanotechnology and its application in physical and biological sciences. Professor Beaumont is a Director of Electronics Scotland, a member of the Technology Talent Strategy Board, a member of ITI Techmedia Advisory Board and a member of the Electronics Advisory Group, SEM Sector Skills Council.

Professor Geoffrey BoultonProfessor Geoffrey Boulton OBE, FGS, FRS, FRSE Vice Principal and Regius Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, University of Edinburgh. Professor Boulton is a member of the Committee for Science and Technology and Chairs its Science and Society subgroup. He is also the Chair of SHEFC’s Knowledge Transfer Taskforce and of the Institute for Science Education in Scotland. Professor Boulton has wide experience of chairing and serving on a broad range of UK and international scientific bodies. His research, for which he has received a number of international awards, is concerned with global environmental change, with implications for issues such as the disposal of radioactive waste.

Professor Muffy CalderProfessor Muffy Calder, FIEE, FRSE Head of the Department of Computing Science and Professor of Computing Science, University of Glasgow. Professor Calder’s research interests are in modelling and reasoning about the behaviour of complex software and biochemical systems using mathematics and automated reasoning tools. She has long-standing industrial collaborations with many world-leading IT companies and has been a research fellow at BT Laboratories and DEC in California. She is a member of the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) research policy group. Professor Calder has a particular interest in how science and technology are perceived outside academia and is particularly interested in developing a better public understanding of the science behind computer science.

Professor Sir Kenneth CalmanProfessor Sir Kenneth Calman KCB, FRCS, FRCP, FMedSci FRSE Vice Chancellor, University of Durham. Sir Kenneth has been Chief Medical Officer at the Scottish Office Home and Health Department and Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health in London. He was Professor of Oncology and Dean of Postgraduate Medicine and Medical Education, University of Glasgow. He has recently carried out a Review of Basic Medical Education in Scotland, for the Scottish Executive and currently chairs an expert group to review NHS genetic services and the application of new genetic knowledge in Scotland.

Professor John CogginsProfessor John Coggins FRSE Vice Principal, Life Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow. He is also Professor of Molecular Enzymology and his major research interests are the structure and mechanism of biosynthetic enzymes and the rational design and development of novel anti-microbial and anti-parasitic agents. Professor Coggins is also Vice President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Chairman of the UK Heads of Biological Science. He has a special interest in the knowledge transfer agenda and in science education and science communication. He is Trustee of the Glasgow Science Centre and a member of the External Advisory Committee of the Glasgow Centre for Population Health.

Professor Julie FitzpatrickProfessor Julie Fitzpatrick MRCVS Chief Executive and Scientific Director of the Moredun Group. Professor Fitzpatrick’s research interests focus on farm animal health and disease, animal welfare and food safety and quality. She was previously Professor in Farm Animal Medicine at the University of Glasgow. Professor Fitzpatrick is Senior Vice President to the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers and is a member of the RCVS Research Committee. She is also a member of the UK Veterinary Residues Committee, the UK Advisory Committee on Animal Feedstuffs and the Veterinary Policy Group of the BVA. In 1993 she was awarded the G Norman Hall Medal for research into animal diseases by the RCVS Trust.

Professor Peter GrantProfessor Peter Grant FREng, FRSE, FIEE, FIEEE Head of the School of Engineering & Electronics, and Professor of Electronic Signal Processing, University of Edinburgh. Professor Grant’s primary research interests are applying signal and information processing techniques for application in mobile communication and radar systems. In 2004 the IEE awarded its most prestigious honour, the Faraday Medal to Professor Grant in recognition of his outstanding work on signal processing. Professor Grant was the IEEE Signal Processing Society distinguished lecturer on DSP for Mobile Communications in 1998, which took him on a lecturing tour to 25 countries. He was previously President of EURASIP, the European Association for Signal, Speech and Image Processing. He was the Chair of the Electronics and Electrical Engineering panel in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise serving previously on the 1992 and 1996 panels. He was an IEE Proceedings editor for 18 years. He is a director of the ISLI in Livingston, the Mobile VCE and the Edinburgh Technology Transfer Centre. He also a member of the Supervisory Board for the Defence Technology Centre in “Electromagnetic and Remote Sensing” with an annual research spend of £5 M.

Dr Stuart MonroDr Stuart Monro CGeol., FGS, ILTM, FRSSA Scientific Director, Our Dynamic Earth and formerly Principal Geologist, British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh. Dr Monro has made distinguished contributions to our understanding of the geology of central Scotland and in the application of geology to environmental issues through his work at the BGS. He has significant experience of teaching geology at all levels in the Open University and has been a member of the Council of the Open University (1994-2002). Dr Monro played a key role in establishing Our Dynamic Earth, and has ongoing responsibility for the scientific content of the exhibition. He is co-convenor of the Steering Group of the Scottish Earth Science Education Forum (SESEF) and is a leading practitioner in promoting science to a wide audience.

Professor Peter MorganProfessor Peter Morgan FRSE Scientific Director and Chief Executive of the Rowett Research Institute (RRI), Aberdeen, and a Director on the Board of Rowett Research Services. He also holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Aberdeen. He sits on the Scottish Food and Health Council and the Scottish Scientific Advisory Committee as well as a number of steering groups for the Scottish Executive’s Chief Scientist’s Office. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the DIfE (Human Nutrition Institute) in Potsdam, Germany, and is a member of the Governing Council for the EU Framework VI Nutrigenomics Centre of Excellence programme. His personal research interests are in molecular endocrinology, focusing on the molecular basis of body weight regulation with the aims of identifying novel genes and unravelling the complex pathways involved in energy homeostasis.

Professor Richard MorrisProfessor Richard Morris FMedSci, FRS, FRSE Professor of Neuroscience, University of Edinburgh. Professor Morris’s research focuses on neurobiological mechanisms of memory, including studies of neurodegenerative disorders of memory such as Alzheimer's disease. He is the life sciences co-oordinator of the Foresight Cognitive Systems Project, an initiative which has brought physical and life scientists together to provide a vision for the future development of cognitive systems through an exploration of recent advances in neuroscience and computer science. Professor Morris holds an Adjunct Professorship of Psychology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, is President-Elect of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, a Guarantor of Brain, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

Dr John NichollsDr John Nicholls Chief Executive, Photonic Materials Ltd., Bellshill. A physicist by discipline, Dr Nicholls has been successful in commercialising his scientific research in both Scotland and the USA. In 1998 he was awarded a Royal Society of Edinburgh/Scottish Enterprise Fellowship, which allowed him to establish the company Photonic Materials. The business develops and manufactures novel optical crystal products for medical scanners and solid-state lasers. Under Dr Nicholls’ direction the company has successfully transitioned from a telecommunications focus to target the medical imaging market. Working with leading customers in the industry, Photonic Materials has introduced new detector crystals for next generation Positron Emission Tomography (PET) body scanners, used in cancer detection and treatment. The company has established strong links with leading international institutions including a number of Scottish universities.

Professor Stuart ReidProfessor Stuart Reid MRCVS, FRSE Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, and Professor of Veterinary Informatics and Epidemiology, Departments of Clinical Studies and Statistics and Modelling Science, Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. Professor Reid is a statistical epidemiologist in the fields of both human and veterinary medicine. Based upon experience in clinical medicine, molecular biology, information science and quantitative epidemiology, his research interests are focused on the combined application of these disciplines in the development of inferential and predictive disease models to assist in approaches to the diagnosis, investigation and management of animal disease. A vet with experience of the private and public sector, Professor Reid has worked in Africa, the USA, is a Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney, is President of the European College of Veterinary Public Health and a member of the UK Veterinary Products Committee.

Professor Jonathan SecklProfessor Jonathan Seckl FRCPE, FMedSci, FRSE holds the Moncrieff-Arrnott Chair of Molecular Medicine, and is the Director of Research, College of Medicine and Veterinary MEdicine at the University Of Edinburgh. A practising clinician, he also holds an honorary consultant post with Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. Professor Seckl leads a large and successful multidisciplinary research group that is focused on steroid hormone action taking an approach that takes the science from “cloning to clinic”.

Dr Barbara SpruceDr Barbara Spruce MRCP, PhD Senior Clinical Research Fellow, Department of Surgery and Molecular Oncology, University of Dundee. Dr Spruce was a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science for a period of ten years between 1991 and 2001. Dr Spruce’s interests lie in translational cancer research, and in delivering the outputs of her research on cancer to the oncology clinic. In 2003 Dr Spruce was awarded the inaugural Gannochy Trust Innovation Award of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for her work on innovative technology to fight cancer cells. She has also been a recipient of a Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept award and a Scottish Enterprise Tayside Commercialisation Fellowship, awards that have assisted the practical implementation of her research. She has a particular interest in forging partnerships between academia and industry, to the benefit of both.

Professor Joyce TaitProfessor Joyce Tait CBE, Director, ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics (Innogen), University of Edinburgh. Innogen is studying the evolution of genomics and life sciences and their far-reaching social and economic implications. Professor Tait has an interdisciplinary background in natural and social sciences including risk assessment and regulation, policy analysis, technology management in the agrochemical and biotechnology industries, strategic and operational decision making in companies and public bodies, public attitudes and communication. She is a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of International Risk Governance Council and is a past President of the Society for Risk Analysis - Europe. Professor Tait was Director of the SHEFC-funded Scottish Universities Policy Research Advice Network (SUPRA) and was Deputy Director of Research and Advisory Services for Scottish Natural Heritage.

Chris van der KuylChris van der Kuyl FRSE: Chris is the Chairman of the newly formed Tayforth Group which has diverse interests in videogames developement, software and entertainment technology businesses. He is widely acknowledged as one of the leading yound entrepreneurs in Scotland and has won various awards. He is a member of the Global Leaders of Tomorrow Programme at the World Economic Forum. Outside his business interests Chris spends time encouraging enterprise education in schools, colleges and universities. He was Chairman of Young Enterprise Scotland for the past seven (7) years, is a member of the Entrepreneurial Exchange and sits on the influential Smith Group advising the Scottish Executive on educational matters.

Eur Ing Graham WrenEur Ing Graham Wren BSc, MSc, Eur Ing Graham Wren, FIMechE, FRSA, CEng, CDir, CMar. Director, WMCS. Graham Wren has a background in engineering design and project management but now focuses on managing the interface between basic ideas and commercialisation. He has been responsible for a number of start up companies and he has a key interest in the growth of scientific based companies in Scotland. He is currently working on a number of start up companies and R&D projects in Scotland. Graham is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Directors. He is a Chartered Engineer and one of the UK’s first Chartered Directors.

Professor Jane Bower BSc, MBA, MA/FPM, PhD, IMC: Professor of Entrepreneurship, Glasgow Caledonian University. Originally trained as a biomedical researcher, Professor Bower developed an interest in the transfer of biotechnology and its commercialisation in both small and large firms. She set up the Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of Aberdeen where she designed undergraduate and postgraduate courses in entrepreneurship. Professor Bower subsequently directed a project management consultancy with responsibility for a range of projects including designing and raising finance for an oilfield technology venture capital fund, rolled out in 1999 as the Nova Fund.

Dr Donald Bruce BSc, PhD, Dip Theol.: Director of the Society, Religion and Technology Project, Church of Scotland since 1992. The SRT Project is a unique unit established in 1970 to explore the ethical implications of current and future technology, from North Sea Oil to GM crops and stem cells. Dr Bruce chairs an expert group on genetic engineering in animals, crops and micro-organisms which was a pioneering engagement of the scientific community with the ethical and social dimension. The resulting book, Engineering Genesis, has been widely acclaimed for its balance and insight. Dr Bruce is engaged on a diverse range of topics with a wide range of UK and international organisations, from both the private and public sectors. These include the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the British and American Associations for the Advancement of Science, the Conference of European Churches, the Council of Europe Bioethics Committee, the European Commission and Parliament, the Edinburgh International Science Festival, The Scottish Civic Forum, Friends of the Earth, Going for Green (Encams), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, PPL Therapeutics, Scottish Agricultural College and UNESCO. Dr Bruce originally trained as a chemist and worked for 15 years in chemistry research, energy policy assessment, and safety and risk analysis in the nuclear energy industry.

Professor Graham Durant BSc, PhD: Professor of Science Interpretation & Communication and Deputy Director, Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow. A geologist by training, Dr Durant has a very active interest in promoting the communication of science. He was the Founder and Director of the Glasgow Dome of Discovery and Director of Science at the Glasgow Science Centre (GSC), Scotland’s largest Millennium project. He is now an Honorary Associate Director of the GSC. In addition he is a member of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, Public Understanding of Science and Technology Panel and Chairman of their awards panel. Dr Durant is also a member of the Science Communication Advisory Panel of the Scottish Science Trust.

Dr Durant resigned from the Scottish Science Advisory Committee in April 2003. He is now the Director of Questacon, Australia's National Science and Technology Centre.

Professor Tariq Durrani OBE BEng, MSc, PhD, FRSE, FREng, FIEEE, FIEE: Deputy Principal and Professor of Signal Processing, University of Strathclyde. Professor Durrani has led one of Europe's largest research groups on signal and image processing. As Deputy Principal he currently has responsibility for staff development, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning. He has played a key role in establishing a strategic relationship between the University of Strathclyde and Carnegie Mellon University in the USA. Professor Durrani is also a Director of The Scottish Institute for Enterprise, the Institute for System Level Integration, Lanarkshire Technology and Innovation Centre and the Scottish Electronics Technology Group. He is a Member of the Board of Councillors, Centre of Excellence on Immersive Media, University of Southern California, and of the Technical Activities and Education Board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest body of professional engineers.

Mrs Sarah Fletcher BSc, MSc, DipEd, PGCE, PGCG: Principal Teacher of Physics, High School of Dundee. Mrs Fletcher has considerable experience in the fields of science and education. Her career has involved scientific medical research, lecturing physics to university science and engineering students, and teaching science in secondary schools. She is also qualified in careers education and guidance. As an Examiner for the Scottish Qualifications Authority, she is very experienced in the courses and standards of assessments required for the national testing of Physics.

Professor Margaret Gill BSc, PhD, BA, FRSE: Director of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, Craigiebuckler, Aberdeen and Honorary Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Aberdeen. Professor Gill has significant experience in managing both applied and strategic research on natural resources in both the public and private sectors, having held senior positions with The Natural Resources Institute and NR International. She is also a Member of Council of the Royal Veterinary College, a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Livestock Research Institute and a Member of the Strategic Advisory Group to AgResearch, New Zealand. A livestock nutritionist originally, her current research interests relate to the interactions between livestock and the environment.

Professor Sally Macintyre OBE, FRSE, FMedSci, BA, MSc, PhD: Director, MRC Social & Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow. Professor Mcintyre is a social scientist by training whose research career has focused on the field of health where she has published widely on the patterning of health by gender, socio-economic status and place of residence. Professor Macintyre also has a broad interest in the physical and biological sciences, and their role in society and has at different times been President of the Sociology and Social Policy section and the Medical Science section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. She is currently the Chair of the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland, Project Group on Post Mortem and Organ Retention and a member of the MRC Horizon Scanning Group.

Professor Andrea Nolan MVB, MRCVS, DVA, PhD, Dipl.ECVA, Dip.EVCPT, FRSE: Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Professor of Veterinary Pharmacology, University of Glasgow. Professor Nolan is the first female Dean of a Veterinary Faculty in the UK and Ireland and has recently been appointed Chair of the Committee of UK Heads of Veterinary Schools. She is a member of the UK Veterinary Products Committee and an honorary member of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers. Professor Nolan was recently a recipient of a Pfizer academic award for animal health research.

Ian Ritchie CBE BSc, CEng, FRSE, FREng, FBCS: Ian Ritchie has been actively engaged in the commercial development of new technology mainly from advances in computer science research for the past 20 years. He founded OWL, a pioneer of hypertext technology, which was acquired by Panasonic. He was active in the start-ups of and serves as the non-executive Chairman of Voxar Ltd, Digital Bridges Ltd, Active Navigation Ltd, and is the Deputy Chairman of VIS Entertainment plc. He is also a Director of Scottish Enterprise, Channel Four Television Corporation, the EPIC Group plc, Mindwarp Pavilion Ltd and the SCRAN Millennium Project. Through his membership of SCRAN, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council and the Bletchley Park Trust he has become actively involved with public understanding of science, and is Chairman of the Scottish Science Trust.

Professor John Savill BA, MBChB, PhD, FRCP, FRCPE, FMed Sci: Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary, Professor of Medicine and Director of the MRC/University of Edinburgh Centre for Inflammation Research. A clinical academic, Professor Savill combines clinical work in acute general medicine and renal medicine with managing the College and directing research in the Centre for Inflammation Research (CIR). The CIR is a new research centre established through significant MRC/University of Edinburgh funding which aims to promote the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases through interdisciplinary study of inflammatory responses and provision of an outstanding environment for research training in the field. Professor Savill has substantial experience of serving on MRC and medical research charity committees and is currently a Governor of the PPP Foundation.

Professor David Wallace CBE, DL, FRS, FREng, FRSE: Vice Chancellor, Loughborough University. Professor Wallace was previously Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Edinburgh, and Director of Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre. He is currently Chair of the DTI e-Science Steering Committee and chaired the DTI TCS Quinquennial Review. He is a member of Council of the Royal Society, and a former member of Council of SERC and EPSRC. Professor Wallace is a Director of Taylor & Francis Group plc and UK e-Universities Worldwide Ltd, and was formerly a Director of the Scottish Life Assurance Company. Dr John Whitelock BSc, PhD: Team Leader, Applied Sciences, Fife College of Further & Higher Education. Dr Whitelock has extensive experience in developing and delivering science based courses across a wide range of levels and subject disciplines in both the university and FE college sectors, more recently being instrumental in establishing the Scottish Colleges Biotechnology Consortium, which aims to provide technician training for the biotechnology industry. Dr Whitelock is actively involved in promoting school-college links to help inspire school pupils to study science and to provide CPD training courses for science teachers and technicians.
